Riding the Waves of Change: Navigating Life’s Transitions

Change can feel like a lot, can’t it?

Even when you have chosen it, there can still be a sense of loss or uncertainty. One moment you might feel hopeful and ready, and the next it hits you just how much is shifting. You are not the only one who feels this way. I see it often, and I have been there myself too.

If you are in the middle of a change and feeling a bit wobbly, I hope these words help you feel a little more understood.

Why change can feel so hard to cope with

It is completely normal to find change overwhelming. Even if you are moving towards something you have wanted, it can still stir up fear, sadness, or doubt. When the change is something that was not your choice, it can feel even heavier to carry.

Maybe your routine has been disrupted. Maybe something that felt safe or familiar has now gone. You might be wondering why you are not coping better, especially if everyone around you seems to be getting on with things. But let me say this clearly. There is nothing wrong with you. You are adjusting. And that takes time and energy.

Sitting in the middle of what was and what is yet to come

This is often where people find themselves stuck. You know something has ended or changed, but you are not quite sure what is coming next. It can feel confusing. You might even start to question who you are without the thing that just shifted.

I want to gently remind you that this stage, the in-between, is a really important part of your journey. It might feel messy, and that is okay. You are not supposed to have it all figured out. You are learning and growing, even if you cannot see it just yet.

Simple things that might help right now

When things feel uncertain, it can help to come back to small routines or gentle habits that bring comfort. Here are a few ideas that might support you while things feel unsettled.

  • Stick to one or two things in your day that feel familiar. It might be your morning cuppa, a short walk, or listening to music you love.
  • Let your feelings out. Write them down, speak them out loud, or just sit with them for a moment. You do not need to solve them, just give them space.
  • Rest if you need to. Change can be exhausting. If your body or mind feels tired, that makes sense.
  • Go easy on yourself. There is no deadline for finding your feet. You are doing the best you can, and that is enough.

If it is feeling like too much to carry alone

Sometimes change brings up more than we expected. You might feel stuck, anxious, or unsure where to turn. If that is where you are right now, you do not have to go through it by yourself.

This is often when people reach out for counselling. It gives you a place to pause, reflect, and make sense of what is happening. You do not have to have the right words or a clear plan. You just need a space where you can show up as you are and feel heard.

You are allowed to ask for support

If this blog has spoken to something in you, and you are thinking you might like a little support, I offer a free phone call so we can talk it through. There is no pressure, just a chance to see if it feels like a good fit.

You do not have to carry everything on your own. Sometimes having someone walk alongside you for a little while can make things feel that bit more manageable.
